caretaker bat
In Coimbra’s Joanina Library, bats have lived among the shelves for centuries. Every night they hunt the insects that could harm the books, quietly becoming guardians that have learned to thrive in this unusual habitat.
In this piece, the bat takes on the posture of Sankofa, an Akan symbol from Ghana that reminds us to look to the past to reclaim what is valuable. The egg in its beak represents the wisdom we cannot afford to lose. Its wings, shaped with Gothic letters, echo the idea that preserving knowledge is a responsibility shared across species.
This artwork is painted in oil on 400g Canson paper.
Measures 40 x 40 cm. The price is €660
(+ €50 if you would like it with the frame).
