Today we live alongside millions of animals that are part of our lives… and also of our absences. In Spain alone, more than 280,000 dogs and cats are taken in each year, many coming from homes where they were once part of the family.
This work is also inspired by Anubis, the Egyptian god with the head of a jackal or dog, and by the ceremony of the weighing of the heart, in which the heart was considered the measure of the soul and the fate of the deceased. Anubis acted as the protector of the departed, “sniffing” the body to declare that its scent was pure and worthy of the gods, ensuring safe passage to the afterlife.
In this piece, the Doberman carries its own heart in its mouth: it guards it, does not bite, it gives.
Within this illustrated bestiary, I portray it as a figure of loyalty, strength, and love.
