In the canals of Xochimilco, axolotls have lived alongside the chinamperos for over 1,500 years. The introduction of carp and tilapia, which eat their eggs and young, along with water pollution and the stress caused by city noise and lights, has disrupted the ecosystem and brought them to the brink of extinction.
In the piece Crystal Axolotl, the animal is depicted half-submerged in its natural habitat and half inside a glass terrarium, reflecting its transformation into a captive pet.
A white lotus blooms on its chest, a symbol of purity, renewal, and resilience in both ancient Egypt and Buddhism, a plant that can open even in murky waters.
